I Saw the Washington Monument Light Show
We knew that there had been a massive celebration in Washington DC on New Years Eve, including a projection show on the Monument, but we thought it was a one-time thing. But then we discovered that the light show was going to run until January 5th! After church on January 4th, we jumped in the car and headed north.
After Siri took us the scenic route past DC and a Maryland casino to enter the capitol from the north, then a small issue where Siri tried to take us back to Richmond, we arrived at the National Mall a few minutes after the 9:00 PM show started. We were a bit bummed, as we wanted to take a video of the show, and now we only had the 10:00 viewing left to capture. So, we set up our cameras and filmed the remainder of the 9:00 as a test run. 10:00 rolled around. The takes were all right, with other attendees keeping the chatter to a minimum, but there were a few instances were people who had hopped the fence walked in front of our cameras and nearby police honked at loitering cars.
On our way out with a couple of recordings, we stopped to talk to a security guard. He informed us that the Freedom 250 organization had expanded the showings to 11:00. We had another chance!
This time, we went around to the side and camped out on the grass. Aside from us, there were one or two other people. We also discovered that this side had a better projection wrap. The recordings we took from this side were fantastic.
The Washington Monument light show was an amazing experience. I'm very glad to have seen it!
