NC Senate Bill 153
Synopsis: Requires several state departments to verify that individuals under their authority are in the country legally, and waive civil liability protections of sanctuary cities and counties.
SB153 will require North Carolina Departments of Public Safety, Adult Correction, Health and Human Services, Commerce, Housing Finance Agency, the State Highway Patrol, and the State Bureau of Investigation to verify that persons under their spheres of supervision are in the country legally. Designated officers within these departments will receive specialized training in order to fulfill this duty appropriately. The verification requirements will give everyone, including legal immigrants and citizens, fair and equal treatment under the law.
Furthermore, Sanctuary Cities/Counties will be held liable if illegal aliens they knowingly harbor commit crimes against person or property within their corporate limits. This is especially important because, even if the illegal alien’s crime is committed without malicious intent, stopping the means of the crime before it occurs saves people’s lives.
Since the enforcement of America’s immigration laws at the federal level, illegal immigration and crimes committed by them have plummeted. North Carolina will be safer if we enforce immigration laws, as well, even if it is something as simple as checking legal immigration status.
